快乐谷中文学校(Happy Valley Chinese School)成立于1995年,自创办以来,历经多次改革与发展。学校最初只是一个由十余名学生组成的暑期课外班,仅开设中文语言与文化课程。随着学校的不断壮大,陆续增设了中国舞、武术、绘画等课程,并于2011年正式在宾夕法尼亚州注册为教育机构,吸引了越来越多的学生和家庭参与其中。
在发展高峰期,学校服务学生人数超过150人。然而,受新冠疫情的影响,学校的发展面临严峻挑战。尽管如此,我们仍深切感谢本地家长、教师和志愿者们始终如一的支持与辛勤付出。未来,学校将继续秉持初心,服务社区,传承和弘扬中华语言与文化。
快乐谷中文学校的发展历史,可以分为下面阶段:
Happy Valley Chinese School was founded in 1995 and has since undergone numerous stages of reform and development. It began as a small summer program with just over ten students, offering only Chinese language and culture classes. As the school grew, additional programs such as Chinese dance, martial arts, and painting were introduced. In 2011, the school was officially registered as an educational institution in the state of Pennsylvania, attracting more and more students and families.
At its peak, the school served over 150 students. However, the COVID-19 pandemic brought significant challenges to its development. Despite these difficulties, we are deeply grateful for the unwavering support and dedication of our local parents, teachers, and volunteers. Looking ahead, the school remains committed to its mission of serving the community and promoting the Chinese language and culture.

创办初衷
快乐谷中文学校的前身是一项由十位学生组成的暑期课外班。最初设立课外班的动机非常朴素:几位熟识的家长发现孩子们在假期中无事可做,便商量着自发组织学习小组,希望孩子们能继续学习中文和中华文化,了解中国历史,认识自己的文化传承。
教学场地
暑期班使用的是位于宾夕法尼亚州立大学(Penn State)东景台(East View Terrace,研究生宿舍区,现已拆除)的社区教室。由于许多家长与Penn State有密切关系,他们利用大学资源,免费借用了这处场地,大大节省了办学成本。
师资力量
最初只有一位老师,需要教授年龄跨度较大的十几名学生。这位教师曾是中国国内的优秀教师,具有丰富的教学经验。随着学校的逐步发展,越来越多优秀的教师通过招聘公告加入教师队伍,助力学校不断壮大。
教材沿革
起初,所有课程内容均由教师自主设计编写。一年后,学校通过中国驻美大使馆邮购了由大使馆推荐的教材,即《中文》系列(由国务院侨务办公室委托暨南大学华文学院编写),并沿用至今。
发展优势
由于众多家长与Penn State有着紧密联系,学校长期使用大学的免费资源租借教室,这为学校的持续运作提供了有力保障。同时,越来越多的大学生、访问学者和教职员工也积极加入教师队伍,为教学质量和学校发展注入了强劲动力。
存在困难
尽管学校使用的是免费教室,但教师薪酬和教材采购等费用依然是一笔不小的支出。快乐谷中文学校一直秉承低收费政策,相较其他地区中文学校更为亲民,但在资源有限的情况下,也带来了运营上的一定挑战。由于多方面原因,学校前身于2001年春季正式停办。

Original Intention:
The predecessor of Happy Valley Chinese School was a summer extracurricular program consisting of 10 students. The original motivation for starting this program was simple: a few parents who knew each other realized their children had nothing to do during the summer break. They decided to form a small learning group, hoping their children could continue studying the Chinese language and culture, learn about Chinese history, and understand their own cultural heritage.
Classroom:
The summer program was held in the community room of East View Terrace (graduate student housing, now demolished) at Penn State. Many parents had close ties with Penn State and were able to use university resources to borrow the classroom for free, significantly reducing operational costs.
Teachers:
In the beginning, there was only one teacher responsible for teaching more than ten students across a wide age range. This teacher had been an outstanding educator in China with rich teaching experience. As the school continued to grow, more and more qualified teachers joined the faculty through job postings, strengthening the teaching team.
Textbooks:
Initially, all course materials were self-designed by the teacher. One year later, the school ordered textbooks recommended by the Chinese Embassy in the U.S., which were shipped from the embassy. These were the "Zhong Wen" (《中文》) series, compiled by the College of Chinese Language and Culture of Jinan University under the commission of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China, and they are still used today.
Advantages:
Due to the strong connections many parents had with Penn State, the school was able to use university facilities for free, ensuring sustainability. In addition, Penn State students, visiting scholars, and faculty members gradually joined the teaching team, providing strong support for the school's continued development.
Challenges:
Although the school benefited from free classroom space, costs for teacher compensation and textbook procurement remained significant. Happy Valley Chinese School maintained a low tuition policy, making it more affordable compared to other Chinese schools. However, limited resources brought operational challenges. For various reasons, the predecessor of Happy Valley Chinese School officially ceased operations in the spring of 2001.

在2001年春季,快乐谷中文学校曾一度正式关闭。然而,同年秋季,在顾校长的不懈努力下,学校重新开放,迎来了新的发展阶段。在此之前,学校仅提供中文语言课程。重启之后,顾校长引入了民族舞蹈、武术、绘画等多种课外兴趣班,极大丰富了中文学校的教学内容。这些课程的开设,不仅提升了学生的学习兴趣,也吸引了更多家庭的关注和参与,学生人数逐步增长。
与此同时,学校开始与**宾州州立大学中国学生学者联合会(Penn State CSSA)**建立合作关系。CSSA是State College地区规模最大的华人团体,致力于传播中华文化,搭建中美之间的交流桥梁,服务宾州州立大学及其周边地区的华人学生和学者。
快乐谷中文学校与CSSA在文化使命上高度一致,双方的紧密合作,使中文学校迈上了一个更广阔的平台。除了家长的支持,学校还获得了CSSA在师资、资源和宣传方面的有力帮助,进一步扩大了影响力,让更多家庭了解、认可并选择加入中文学校。随着影响力的提升,越来越多周边地区的家庭也开始前来就读,学校发展进入了良性循环。
教学场地
随着学生数量的快速增长和课程体系的日益丰富,原有的教学场地已无法满足需求。得益于与CSSA的合作,学校每周日可免费使用宾州州立大学的Willard教学楼开展教学活动,极大缓解了空间不足的问题。
面临挑战
尽管学校在不断壮大,但随着课程的多样化,师资问题始终是亟待解决的核心挑战。多元课程对教师的专业素养提出了更高要求。CSSA的支持在一定程度上缓解了这一问题,为学校提供了部分教学资源,但随着发展深入,师资建设仍是学校未来努力的重点方向之一。

In the spring of 2001, Happy Valley Chinese School officially closed its doors. However, by the fall of the same year, thanks to the tireless efforts of the third principal, Ms. Gu, the school reopened and entered a new stage of development. Prior to this, the school had only offered Chinese language classes. After reopening, Ms. Gu introduced extracurricular enrichment programs such as traditional Chinese dance, martial arts, and painting. These additions greatly enhanced the school’s curriculum, sparked student interest, and attracted growing numbers of families—leading to a steady increase in enrollment.
Around the same time, the school also began collaborating with the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at Penn State (Penn State CSSA). As the largest Chinese community organization in State College, CSSA is dedicated to promoting Chinese culture, building a cultural bridge between China and the United States, and serving Chinese students and scholars at Penn State and the surrounding area.
Happy Valley Chinese School and CSSA share a common mission of preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture. Their close cooperation elevated the school to a broader platform. Beyond the support of parents, the school also gained access to CSSA’s resources, including teacher referrals, outreach, and publicity, which further expanded the school’s visibility and reputation. As its influence grew, more families from neighboring areas began enrolling their children, and the school entered a new phase of healthy growth.
Teaching Facilities
As enrollment surged and course offerings diversified, the original classroom space became insufficient. Thanks to its partnership with CSSA, the school was able to use classrooms in Penn State’s Willard Building every Sunday free of charge—greatly alleviating the space limitations and supporting continued growth.
Challenges
Despite the school’s steady development, the growing diversity of its curriculum brought ongoing challenges in faculty recruitment. A wider variety of programs required teachers with more specialized qualifications. While CSSA’s support helped ease staffing shortages to some extent, faculty development remains a key priority for the school as it continues to grow.

转折与改变
截至2011年,快乐谷中文学校已初具规模,办学声誉良好,各方面发展稳健,深受家长和学生的欢迎。然而,由于学校尚未在政府部门正式注册,其运作仍以家长团体组织的课外班形式存在,这在很大程度上限制了中文学校的进一步发展。
首先,随着学校影响力的扩大,越来越多非华裔家庭希望子女能在中文学校学习中文、了解中华文化。但由于学校缺乏正式的法律注册文件,一些家长存在顾虑,影响了学校的招生。其次,无法注册学校银行账户、不能独立签署租赁合约等问题,限制了学校开展更多活动的空间和可能性。
在学校董事会的积极推动与不懈努力下,2011年7月,快乐谷中文学校在宾夕法尼亚州正式注册为教育机构。自此,学校运营更加系统规范。
发展优势
成为注册机构后,学校受到了法律保护,也获得了更多发展资源。
一方面,非华裔家庭更加安心地将孩子送入中文学校学习,生源不断扩大,学生背景也更加多元化。另一方面,学校得以合法租赁场地、举办丰富多样的教学与文化活动,更好地服务于学生、家长及社区,促进亲师关系,为孩子们创造更多难忘而有意义的成长经历。
面临的挑战
但正式注册也为执行团队带来诸多额外事务,包括网站维护、邮件系统管理、保险购买、税务申报等,这些工作往往专业性强、复杂程度高,超出了普通志愿者的能力范围,给团队带来极大挑战。
此外,教师资源始终紧缺。由于中文学校薪资有限,许多教师完全是出于对社区的奉献精神参与教学,其性质更类似志愿服务,需要投入大量时间与热情。
在此,我们要特别感谢来自Penn State大学的学生以及State College High School的高中生长期以来为中文学校担任义工。他们因对中华文化的热爱与对社区的认同,持续为学校贡献自己的力量,支持学校稳步发展。

Turning Point and Transformation:
By 2011, Happy Valley Chinese School had already taken shape, enjoying a strong reputation and stable development across all areas. It was well-received by both parents and students. However, since the school had not been officially registered with the government, it could only operate as a parent-organized extracurricular program, which greatly limited its potential for further growth.
First, as the school gained popularity, more non-Chinese families expressed interest in having their children learn Chinese and Chinese culture. Yet, due to the lack of formal legal documentation, some parents had concerns, which led to a loss of prospective students.
Second, the absence of legal status meant the school could not open its own bank account or sign rental agreements for venues, severely restricting its ability to organize various activities.
Thanks to the great efforts of the school’s board of directors, in July 2011, Happy Valley Chinese School officially registered as an educational institution in the state of Pennsylvania. Since then, the school’s operations have become more structured and standardized, marking a new chapter in its development.
Advantages of Becoming a Registered Institution:
After registration, the school came under legal protection and gained access to more resources.
On the one hand, families from non-Chinese backgrounds felt more confident enrolling their children, leading to a growing and more diverse student body.
On the other hand, the school could now legally rent venues and host a variety of educational and cultural events, better serving students, parents, and the broader community. These activities also helped strengthen relationships between teachers and families and created more meaningful and lasting memories for students and parents alike.
Ongoing Challenges:
However, becoming a registered institution also brought many additional responsibilities to the administrative team, such as website maintenance, email communication systems, insurance, and tax filing. Many of these tasks require a level of expertise beyond that of typical volunteers, placing a heavy burden on the team.
Additionally, there has been a persistent shortage of teachers. Due to limited funding, most of those who teach at the school do so out of a strong sense of community service. Teaching at the Chinese school is similar to volunteer work, requiring a significant investment of time and passion.
We are especially grateful to the students from Penn State University and State College Area High School, who have served as long-time volunteers at the Chinese school. Motivated by their appreciation of Chinese culture and love for the community, they have consistently contributed their time and effort, supporting the school’s steady growth.

改变与努力
二零二零年三月,随着新冠疫情在全美迅速蔓延,学区关闭校舍,全面转入线上教学,直到2021年春季。在端校长的带领下, 快乐谷中文学校师生迅速响应,第一时间转入线上授课。学校不仅自筹资金购买了 Google 和 Zoom 的相关服务,保障了课程的正常运行,还在同年夏季开设了每日免费中文夏令营 (同年六月十五日起, 八月十四日截至, 共计九周),还发动高中生义工开设各种除中文外的兴趣班课程 (全部免费) , 为疫情期间倍感焦虑的家长提供了有力支持,为学生们带来了持续的中文学习平台。这一举措不仅稳定了教学质量,也体现了中文学校服务社区、关怀家庭的初心与责任。
面对资金紧张的局面,端校长携手会计张帆女士(Ms. Fan Zhang),成功向联邦政府申请了 Paycheck Protection Program(PPP)疫情援助贷款,大大缓解了中文学校的财务压力,为学校稳定运营争取了宝贵空间。
在赵校长的积极推动下,学校也启动了**联邦免税资格(exempt status)**的申请流程。未来,一旦获批,学校将能够正式接受来自机构或个人的捐赠,为可持续发展打开新的财务通道。此外,在疫情后期恢复线下教学之际,学校组织了如书法展示、灯谜竞猜等一系列线下文化活动,帮助学生重新适应课堂学习,增强了师生之间的互动与归属感,缓解了长时间网课带来的疏离。
挑战与持续问题
在疫情的深远影响下,State College 地区的中文学校也经历了一场深刻的变革。在挑战中前行,在变化中创新,展现出强大的韧性与生命力。然而,现实困难依旧严峻:
学生参与度下降。疫情后期,随着经济环境的不确定性加剧,各类课外活动参与率普遍下降。一部分家长强烈希望全面恢复疫情前的线下教学模式,而另一部分家长则分流、倾向于线上课程。更由于访问学者家庭的流动性减少,中文学校虽整体报名人数稳定,学生人数有所下降,直接影响了课堂设置的稳定性与持续性。
教师队伍不稳定,资源紧张。 中文学校一直面临教师薪资偏低的问题,绝大多数授课教师本着奉献精神参与教学。疫情以来,教师的流动性增加,持续保持教学质量成为新的挑战。
场地租赁困难加剧。 疫情后,长期合作的South Hills School of Business & Technology进行了课程内容和教室结构的大量调整。因其教室装修完工时间以及可用教室数量的不确定性,中文学校不得不终止长期租赁协议,积极寻找新的教学场所。这一过程涉及场地审批、保险、合约等一系列复杂流程,给行政管理带来了额外压力。
课程内容需及时更新。随着家长与学生期望的不断提高,中文教学已不仅仅局限于语言技能的传授,越来越多家庭希望课程能涵盖更丰富的内容,如中华文化、计算机基础、编程技能以及与STEM相关的知识领域。
亮点与未来展望
尽管困难重重,疫情也带来了一些意想不到的正面变化:
家校联系更加紧密。 线上教学需要家长更多地参与与支持,反而拉近了教师与家长之间的沟通距离,使得家长更深入了解孩子的学习过程,形成了良性互动与协作关系。
技术与制度建设同步提升。 疫情推动了学校行政信息化的进程,为未来的教学管理提供了更加高效、透明的基础设施。
随着学校注册正规化的逐步推进、生源结构的持续优化,以及课程内容的不断创新,快乐谷中文学校将以更加生动有趣、贴近时代的教学内容回馈学生和家长的期待。在赵校长、全体教师与家长志愿者的共同努力下,中文学校的教学质量、组织能力和社会影响力不断提升。

Changes and Efforts
In March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic rapidly spread across the United States, school districts closed their campuses and fully transitioned to online instruction, which continued until the spring of 2021.
Under the leadership of Principal Duan, the teachers and students of Happy Valley Chinese School responded swiftly, transitioning to virtual classes at the earliest opportunity. The school not only raised its own funds to purchase Google and Zoom services to ensure uninterrupted teaching, but also launched a free online Chinese summer camp that year. This provided strong support to families experiencing heightened anxiety during the pandemic and offered students a consistent platform for learning Chinese. This initiative not only stabilized teaching quality but also reflected the school’s commitment to serving the community and supporting families with care and responsibility.
Facing significant financial pressure, she worked together with the school’s accountant, Ms. Fan Zhang, to successfully apply for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), a federal COVID relief loan. This significantly eased the school’s financial burden and created valuable room for stable operations.
During Principal Zhao’s term, the school also initiated the application process for federal tax-exempt status. Once approved, this status will allow the school to officially accept donations from individuals and organizations, opening new financial avenues for sustainable development. In the later stages of the pandemic, as in-person teaching resumed, the school organized various on-site cultural activities, such as calligraphy exhibitions and lantern riddle contests, helping students readjust to classroom life, strengthen teacher-student bonds, and ease the sense of disconnection caused by prolonged online learning.
Challenges and Ongoing Issues
The COVID-19 pandemic brought profound changes to Chinese schools in the State College area. Advancing through adversity and innovating amid change, Happy Valley Chinese School has demonstrated strong resilience and vitality. Nevertheless, several real challenges remain:

With the school’s formal registration progressing steadily, a more stable student base, and continued innovation in curriculum design, Happy Valley Chinese School is poised to meet student and parent expectations with increasingly engaging and modern educational content. Under the joint efforts of Principal Zhao, all faculty members, and parent volunteers, the school continues to enhance its educational quality, organizational capacity, and community impact.
Looking ahead, with deepened collaboration with organizations such as Penn State CSSA, the school will further expand its resource platforms, strengthen its ties to the local community, and nurture a new generation of students who love the Chinese language and understand Chinese culture.
